Icydock mb559us-1s

Right now, I?m searching for an external storage solution to put in my newly purchase Seagate SATA II hard drive. I own a Mac G4 at home and was hoping to find a enclosure that has similar design to coordinate with or at least that looks and feels like a external Mac unit. With all the manufactures out there I stumbled upon an enclosure from a company called ICY DOCK. It?s called an MB559US. Tom?s hardware gave a good review on this unit. Currently, Newegg.com has it selling for $64.99. This is a eSATA/USB 2.0 combo. Is that a good deal? What do you guys think?

There are other good ones, too. I got an AZIO unit from Newegg. Important point, though: if you're planning to use it via eSATA connection (certainly better than the USB2 alternative), check that your SATA controller does support eSATA. Some of these external units come with an adapter bracket that gives you an eSATA connector on the back of the case when you plug into a regular SATA connector on the motherboard. But if the SATA controller does not specifically support eSATA, there is a risk it might not work smoothly. Oh, it might work fine. But if you have an eSATA controller it's VERY likely to work.

OK, if you read the test on Tom's you should read the thread thoroughly discussing the product.

It might not be necessary to buy a separate eSATA controller. The only way you are going to find out is by trying. I'd test it without the controller for a few days.

But if you want to be on the safe side, buy the Promise controller mentioned in the thread.

I participated in that thread, but in the end, I bought another USB external, and I'm happy with it. Just installed it today, a Seagate 120 GB USB.
