Holy crap, is it ever slippery today! The streets aren't too bad but the sidewalks are iced up with a thin cover of water as freezing rain keeps falling down on Ottawa. I just went to do my groceries and it was quite an adventure for a distance of just two city blocks.

On the way to the supermarket, I managed to recover quite well every time I started drifting on the ice and losing my balance. most scary moment occurred when my right leg drifted due north and my left leg due south as I was walking towards the west on Rideau Street. I had a momentary vision of a groin injury but I recovered fast enough to avoid this unpleasant outcome. Made it to the supermarket without further incident so I thought it would be all right on the way home.

I was wrong.

I was only about 100m from the supermarket, carrying about 6-7kg in each hand when my feet started going forward more than I had intended in that step. I tried to recover my balance but overcompensated. At this point, it was a lost cause and I was irremediably going to land face first in a large puddle of icy water. I managed to twist at the very end and landed on my right side instead of my face. Still got all wet and some of my frozen food dropped around me. Thankfully, I use cloth bags and nothing was broken (though the milk carton was dented a bit).

I gathered my goods and my dignity and managed to reach home to tell you guys about it.

Moral of the story is be careful out there today if you live in eastern North America.

I live in eastern North America and it's fine here. Supposed to go up into the 50's. Sounds like it's more Eastern Canada, lol. Still think Canada's the bomb?

Maybe you could rig a backpack generator and strap some hair dryers to your pant legs pointing in the general direction you wish to travel?

Don't worry, guys. I may be sore tomorrow as I awakened some long-forgotten muscles but I'm not bruised and nothing was broken. In fact, I fell so slowly it was like bullet time in The Matrix. That plus I have decent cushioning all around my body.

I thought your title was "Icy wet sidewalk 1 - dentalfloss 0". I had to check it out...

Seriously, I know what you mean. Snow is much easier to walk on than ice.

Part of this sounds like the start of a bad test question.
"If I am 100m from the market, carrying 7kg in each hand, and one foot starts moving forward at 0.5m/sec faster than the other one, how much force should I have used to compensate for this? Assume a coefficient of friction of 0.15.
Bonus: What flavor of ice cream was in the blue bag?

You forgot some key information. How long are his legs? What is his mass?

You lost because you were carrying kgs. If you were carrying lbs., you would have been okay.
