just root and put an ics rom

We need the source code that is released alongside an official update to get flawless ICS roms for the Galaxy S2 i777. Besides a official release usually gives the devs something more stable to build off of.

Feb 2013.

They said it would be shortly after the S2 so I'd say late March/early April. The various honeycomb updates came out pretty quickly so there is no reason to expect ICS to take an eternity.

I received my ICS update for my transformer and have yet to figure out how to use the face unlock feature. So, I am not in any hurry to get ICS for my sgs2.

Just got the update. Seems to be a bit smoother but SGS2 was already damn smooth. Samsung included a new lockscreen that includes native weather widget, did not get any of the ICS camera features though.

Look at all these Samsung devices getting ICS updates!!!
I doubt it would make the people complaining about ICS updates shutup though.
The Samsung of today is not the Samsung of the past. They learned most of their lessons.
Samsung is the 1st major Android device manufacturer to release updates to a majority of their devices.

Meanwhile, most of Motorola's devices are still in the Evaluation & Planning stage. :hmm:

This chart makes me cringe everytime I look at it.
You see all those "Development" stage phones that say "rollouts begin Q2 and Q3 2012"?

That could mean all those phones in the "Evaluation & Planning" stage either won't get ICS or will get them in Q4 2012 or Q1 2013(if Motorola ever decides to make a future announcement that they will even get ICS at all...)
Yay.

I still dont trust Samsung and think their pace is too slow. Asus is my benchmark. Asus does reasonable job communicating with the community and putting out updates. Too bad they don't make phones.

Since ASUS doesn't make phones, you have to go with the next best benchmark which is Samsung. Samsung was the 1st manufacturer to release Gingerbread on their phones. They are now also the 1st to release ICS.
ASUS, Samsung, and whatever particular Nexus device made by whomever are my benchmark.
I'd rather buy an Apple iPhone than a Huwaei or Motorola(assuming it's not a Nexus) device.

The Vivid in the USA had ICS before the SGS2 series did.
When was this?
http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-vivid-get-ics-coming-weeks-leak-available-now-brave

That article is dated March 6th.
From my understanding of that article, HTC hasn't released an "official" ICS update yet.
It is my understanding that that was a leaked ICS ROM/OTA update.

Could HTC have released an "official" ICS update between March 6th of the dated article and yesterday, March 12th when Samsung started doing rollouts for the Galaxy S II?
Possibly(but unlikely)...Then again I haven't really kept up with news.

I would be looking for blood right now if I had a SII:

http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/13/2867950/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-android-4-0-video

That would push me to root/ROM in a heartbeat. Normally I'm not one to do that within a devices' reasonable update window but that is simply unacceptable.

Viper GTS

Why? Because it comes with Touchwiz? You didn't think it wouldn't did you?
I would think that everyone that really hates the Touchwiz launcher already knows how to slap something different on there.
