Networking problems are haunting me... Have tried everything I know how to do..

have 2 computers one with xp pro, the other with win98se. Trying to get ICS going so the win 98 comp. can connect through the xp computer.. problem is, Can't get anything to recognize anything on the network.. have checked cards, cords. I attempt to run the networking wizard on win xp and at first it came up with an error somethign about spooling.. looked into that. Apparently it didn't like the printer drivers?? (would that cause network problems like this?? a printer driver??) anyway disabled the spooling thing and uninstalled the printer, run the wizard again, this time it runs but at the end it says it encountered erros.. But it doesn't give me an error code or anything.. how the heck can you deal with an error when it doesn't tell you what kind of an error....

looking at the win 98se computer I try to release and renew the ip addy for the network card in the box. IT comes up adn says DHCP unavilabel renewing adapter... So... any suggestions? i'm at my wits end here..

thanks.

You can always get a router and make life easy... Best Buy has one this week on sale.. $30 after rebate. Hope that helps!

The Network Wizard is like Fast Food. Cheap but unhealthy (Fat & Cholesterol).

Any wizard concerning Network might work once when you first configure the Network. Any further use of the Wizard can trash the Network since it changes back settings that was build in time by applications and hardware installations. The time it is supposable saved by using the wizard, get used many times over when trying to correct the mess later on.

In other word learning how to configure manually takes more time at the beginning, but saves much more time down the line.

As for DialUp, the Content of the Following Link Might Help:

Sharing the Internet with DialUp Connection.

ICS does work if you know what you're doing with it. forget the screwy wizard though it's more flaky than grandma's bisquits. 😀

basic winxp ics setup

modem set to be ics enabled, you will get a prompt saying you will be re-asigned to the ip addy of 192.168.0.1(requirement for windows ics)
go to your nic setings check to make sure you're using subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 that's all for the system sharing.

Client boxes should be set to ip: 192.168.0.xxx(xxx=2-253 different # for each machine) take off dhcp the xp box is not a dchp server!!!
subnet 255.255.255.0
dns 192.168.0.1
gateway 192.168.0.1

it's that easy.

don't really know why micro$oft made a wizard for that anyway, it's too simple to screw up.

thanks guys.. I think this is getting closer.. I set up the system ilke it was recommended above.. (thanks lobadobadingdong)

I can now ping the win 98se computer from the windows xp computer... However I still can't See any of the shared folders on the xp computer.. and as far as the 98se computer pinging the xp computer it won't ping..... anymore ideas?? I've ran threw everything I can think of, everythign I have been pointed to... just need some more help.. thanks guys
