ICQ is getting ridiculous!

I just noticed that it is taking up 13megs of my memory at first startup. That is ridiculous! Even Eudora Pro 5 doesn't take up that much! BLOATWARE!

Anyone know a utility that will convert a 2000B ICQ database back to 99b or earlier? Its seems that once you upgrade, you're left with no options to going back.

Thanks,
Joe

AFAIK, there are no programs that convert your database to an older format.

I know, since ICQ99, ICQ has become a piece of bloatware. That's why I'm still using ICQ98. Plain, fast, simple, and it has everything I need. I'm sure 80% of the people using ICQ don't utilise 75% of the features of ICQ2K...

Well I don't see a performance hit either (I've got 384megs also), but I just thought it was stupid that a program made to send a couple of lines of text could take up 13megs o' ram.

Yeah, ICQ is getting out of hand adding lots of features that i dont really want. When i reformatted to put ME on for the second time i went back to 99b. I found that 2000b was a hogged 99% of my resources when i first connected to the net and would sometimes hang. All i want the proggy to do is to send text message and i dont mind a few banners for that. Paging etc is an option i will never use

Anybody else see a surge in spam email after using the newest ICQ?

Probably a coincidence, but I wonder sometimes what AOL is up to.

I am desperatly looking for some alternative for ICQ. There are some new programs who supposedly are able to connect with the ICQ network, but they aren't reliable, yet. Maybe the future will bring something.
The only things I'd say are required is the basic message exchange, the file transfer and the chat. I never ever use the other junk, and the latter two are borderline already, as there are better programs for both.

anybody wants ICQ99a just send me a request. My ICQ no. is here... 🙂
Do ya a file transfer...

I too would be interested in an alternative method 🙂

It is true, it does use ~12M when you first start it. BUT, if you leave it running for ~15M, it goes down to a lowely 1.7M. According to my research, that is only .2M less that AOL IM, which supposedly is supposed to be much better.

Oh, and I used to have 99b installed. I found that, at least in Win2k, it lost about .5M per hour thru some sort of memory leak. That doesn't happen so far with the latest 2000b. I also turned off all the extras and pretty stuff in 2000, so that it looks a lot like 99b. And no splash screen! 🙂
