I remember there were a few icq clients that were made by 3red parties. These were supposed to offer many of the things icq's clients have, but less bloated.

can u refresh my memory, and tell what the names of these were?

One of them is Miranda ICQ, it's open source and it not up to date will all the features the offical ICQ has but it uses up a lot less resources :)

heh, well what features AREN'T supported?

I only need to be able to see history, type instant messages, and see who is online.. later on when I get broadband I might want voice messaging (talking as if it was a phone), but that's about it..

is there a way to convert 2000a databases to 99b? I think 99b has all the4 features i want, and a good interface, but less bloat than the 2000a/b.

I've used 2000a for awhile, I've heard there is even more bloat on 2000b so I see no reason to upgrade, I like the part of 2000a that keeps a irc'ish window open with your messages instead of popping up a new message window each time.

The 'B' stands for extra bloat.

2000a here, mostly for the irc-ish window. Wish they'd make it more resource-friendly, no need for it to be so wasteful.

I must say ICQ is a rather heavy program, my ICQ2000b takes 17MB ram fully loaded. But it isnt anything a modern PC cannot handle I suppose. Anyway, some new features on the 2000B is actually useful like the PC-PC phone calling, the personal detail page improvement, and the interface improvement.

ok, my reason for not going to 99b is simple. all my contact list is in 2000a format, though I have some of it in 99b format still (backed up on a CD), I'd like to have all of my contacts still, without having to go ask everyone for their authorization again.
