Icons slow to show up

I've noticed lately that when I open a folder, it first shows the generic icon for a program before changing into an icon particular to that program. In my Utilities folder which is where I keep the programs that I've downloaded, it takes a second for each icon to change although I can see all the files at once when I open up the folder. Any idea what's up with this? Not sure if its a software issue or something to do with the hdd.

maybe your anti-virus is scanning the files/shortcuts right when you open the folder. reboot, disable your AV for a minute, then head to the same folder (dont click any of the icons). see if that changes anything. btw, the more files/shortcuts you have in a folder, the longer it takes to parse their icons or metadata. a folder with 10 MP3s opens a lot faster than one with 1000, in my PCs.
