Icons reshuffle on Desktop of Win2000

Is it time to start thinking about reformatting my Windows 2000 Pro partition and doing a reinstall from scratch? Lately every couple days or so I see all my desktop icons suddenly reordered as if I had done a Rearrange Icons, but I haven't. I have Wintidy running so I can get the configuration back, however I'm wondering what's up. I'm running SP2. When I installed SP3, my boot times went from around 130 seconds to 4 to 6 minutes so I Ghosted back my SP2. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks. BTW, I have at least 64 programs in my Add/Remove Programs so a reinstall is not trivial. I did a fresh install 7 months ago.

Does this happen specifially after you run one app? That would be the more likely culprit.

The desktop icons will get moved around if you run a sloppily programmed fullscreen app that uses a lower resolution that your current desktop. The desktop settings are restored when you change the focus of the app, or close it, but the icons will be rearranged.

Check through your older programs one by one and see if this is the case.

I don't think that's it. It wasn't happening at all and I haven't installed anything lately but it started happening a week or so ago. I've also had lockups in Win2000. Sometimes the freezes thaw after a couple minutes, I've discovered. A couple of times I Reset the computer and couldn't boot the first time or two I tried to boot. I thought I was experiencing HD failure but then the behavior disappeared and I didn't know what to think. Now my icons get scrambled and I had the 2 min. freeze yesterday. Weird.

Arrange the icons on the desktop they way you want them,
then click-once on the desktop and press F5.

That will force Windows to save the current desktop setup.

Keep in mind that if Explorer hangs often enough, it will kill the settings.

The lockups maybe be caused by a fragmented or corrupted Pagefile. SP3 like's to do that.

I'm running SP2. When I restore the Wintidy settings, IF I CLICK THE DESKTOP FIRST, hitting F5 scrambles the settings again. Really weird. I may be swapping. Going back to 512 MB from 256 shortly.
