icons in tray randomly vanish

this is on XP Pro all latest patches, I did the disable U PNP thing. The only way I can get the icons back right now is to run cleanup! so it's almost like there's something in the temp files causing this. I'm out of ideas how to fix it, my GF is getting tired of running Cleanup every time she wants her icons back.

any ideas?

Sounds like the Icon Cache is borked. Perhaps increasing its size?(google can get u that)

get tweakUI, and run it, it can repair the ICON caches. I'd then run http://housecall.trendmicro.com and have it scan all drives and folders.

I had her go into her registry and add max cached icon 2000 with no luck, I will have her delete the actual icon cache file and hope that fixes it. I'll tell her to run housecall tonight good call. She has AntiVir running and does weekly scans with Spyboy & Adaware, but an additional scan can never hurt.
