Greetings. Hope this belongs here, I think, but not positive (might be OS)

Somewhere, in the days before holiday getaway, I messed up something in my SSD re no matter how I configure folders, no matter what I choose re VIEW in any of my several Cursors folders (including when I open MOUSE>pointers, tho there, I at least get a preview when I mouse over one)….I cannot get the actual cursors to display, only the blank icons you see below.

I know….I messed sumthin up, mea culpa I tried hard to find a fix but I failed.:(

When I boot into my backup drive, my WD Black (I did last clone to it from my SDD around 10 days ago, things are normal re this issue, so U bet, I messed sumthin up.

I would do a reverse clone of the WD mechanical to my SSD which would put this right, but do not wanna write the whole drive to my pretty new SSD for obvious reasons!

Below, screenie from the SSD showing the problem; then, screenie from the not messed up WD. Pls know this issue does not appear in any other folder. Only all my cursors folders. I have several cause I need them.
If anyone can figure this out and share some fix….that would be AWESOME.

Rats. Took no time, but it says everything is JUST FINE. It is SO not. I must stop fiddling....when everything is fine to begin with.

U think I need to try a repair install?

Again, I am insane/neurotic about trying not to write needlessly to this new SSD. So do not wanna do a full reverse clone to it. See, even tho this is a good drive, that one issue re finite writes is always in the back of my little mind.

K....I just ran below....when it finished, DOS window closed.

I get this. Windows is punishing me for being a compulsive fiddler/cleaner. This is not life and death, I just like it when everything works normally.

K...just found this: http://www.mydigitallife.info/fix-blank-or-white-shortcut-icons-on-desktop/

There is an actual name for my issue: WHITE PAPER ICONS.

But above addresses desktop icons, and, again, this problem I caused in some way is only manifesting in my cursors folders, no others.

Just remembered, just before this happened, I was getting free icon/cursor editing apps! And all of them sucked. So I uninstalled them after testing each one to edit my cursors! One of them must have been the culprit. Maybe when I let Revo uninstaller clean the registry and residue files after uninstalling each one.....it messed things up.
And, in my icons folders, things are normal, this is only re cursors folders.

Edit:

What do we think of this convoluted fix I just found?

You can restore your registry files manually to an earlier point by going through the steps outlined below. The process is involved and requires some careful typing. Ask a computer-savvy friend to assist you if you lack experience in this area.
1. Keep tapping F8 during the early boot phase.
2. Select Safe Mode Command Prompt from the menu.
3. Log on as Administrator if prompted.
4. Select Repair when prompted.
5. Select the Command Prompt.
6. Identify the correct drive letter for your Windows installation. It could be drive E: or F:. You do it by typing the commands
dir CWin*
dir \Win*
dir EWin*
until you find the Windows folder.
I will call that drive "Q:".
7. Type these commands:
cd /d Qwindows\System32\config
xcopy *.* QRegBack\
cd RegBack
dir
8. Examine the dates of the Software, System and SAM files. Were the files created before or after your problem became apparent?
9. If they were made before the problem became apparent then you can type these commands:
copy /y software ..
copy /y System ..
copy /y Sam ..
(the two dots are part of each command)
10. Reboot normally. If things do not work out then you can backtrack by copying the original registry files from QRegback to QWindows\System32\config.

So I scheduled a boot time chkdsk and it ran. NUTHIN. I mean it, Windows is lying re everything is just fine. Does it think I can't SEE? Who am I going to believe, Windows or my own eyes?

Edit: K, found a new utility to REBUILD The icons CACHE, got it, ran it, rebooted....NUTHIN changed.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html

Again, despite all the free space I make sure to have, no way will I write the entire contents of my WD Black backup drive to this poor new wee SDD! Like write 96GBs to it in one fell swoop? No way.

And, since I use some custom desktop icons not standard in W7 I made and must have, no way will I do anything to return things to the standard ones.

Edit: this is one of the three I got, tried and then uninstalled. I think this one may have been the culprit, stay away from this freeware!

I am deFEATED.

I found this magic fix utility from MS, got it ran it, given what it said upon diagnosis, I was positive it would undo the mess I made, see below. Well, IT DIDN'T, OK? I told it to fix it, I rebooted....and I still have white paper icons in my cursors folders.

It flashed the desktop, made my desktop icons bigger, put them all on the left......it fixed NOTHING.
