Icon's disappear!!!!

Something is wrong with my friends computer so i come to the good people of Anandtech.

When he moves the mouse, all the icons disappear. The keyboard seems to work fine when he presses the windows key. I got him to press the windows key and Pause/Break to see what service pack he was using. He is using service pack 1. He has a two button corded mouse. I hope someone has a suggestion.

lol okay. I think he's actually sleeping from all the drinking last night. So im not sure when i'll get a chance to talk to him. Could you explain to me what the Event Viewer is?
 
in control panel
Administrative tools
event viewer
look under system and application - look for warning !!!! and error XXXX

Include any Source and ID and other information.
