Is there any real benefit to having ur media on iCloud rather than on some server u or someone else hosts using Orb/Winamp Remote? Why is iCloud so impressive when the same stuff has been done before by Orb/Winamp Remote and other similar software?

Except it's not the same at all. iCloud syncs, your suggestions stream. Also iCloud encompasses more than just music, and is really meant to complement Apple devices and iTunes.

The better solution for you depends on your use I s'pose.

Seems like every time Apple does something, people complain that they're doing something similar to what others have done before them. And usually people assume (incorrectly) that Apple claims to invent a lot of things (Apple never claimed to invent the MP3 player, Podcasts, tablets, clouds or precipitation).

If Winamp whatever works for you, awesome! It doesn't sound like it really does something similar to what iCloud does though. If you don't have any Apple devices, it's unlikely that you would be at all interested in iCloud. They didn't design it for Apple haters. They designed it for their users; it is another way that Apple tightly integrates all of their products, which is one of their strengths. People call it the Apple "ecosystem" - you buy one Apple product, and then you buy more because they all work so well together.
