I saw yesterday that iCloud went somewhat live but some functions are limited if you're not a dev.
Decided to give it a spin to see what it was all about.
I found some sites hosting the new Lion 10.7.2 update (beta) that allows the install of the iCloud integration components as well as the new iTunes beta that has the iCloud integration as well.
Got that all installed on my new Air and my older Mini and tried signing in with my old MobileMe account that I had never renewed a few months ago. Thankfully and to my surprise it worked! I now see my Mini and my Air in the "Find my iPhone" app on my iPhone and iPad and have everything syncing to iCloud that it allows.
So far my favorite function by far is iOS 5 beta 4's iTunes Wifi sync. That is something I've been waiting on for literally years. Ever since the 1st gen Zune I had that had Wifi syncing I've wondered what in the hell was taking Apple so damn long.
It seems to automatically wifi sync if you're plugged into power and also looks like you can manually kick it off from the settings menus.
Another really cool and long over due improvement is finally the ability to have iOS spell check but not auto correct!
Such a simple little thing that hasn't been addressed in such a long time. It used to be that if you disabled the auto correct spell check function it forced the spell check function to also be disabled. I've always just wanted it to point out misspelled words but not correct them automatically and now that's finally a reality.
Another long overdue feature, you can now finally see on an iOS device all your apps and the amount of space/capacity they're consuming on your iDevice. There's been so many times I've gone to install an app and received the message that I was out of space. Without there ever before being a easy way to tell what was taking up the most space quickly, it was always a game of trying to clean up stuff you didn't care to keep as much vs what would free up the most space the fastest.
I'm a little disappointed at the pricing tiers from Apple for the additional iCloud storage capacities. It's $99 for the top tier that's a total of 55GB capacity. 5GB is free and then there's a few tiers between that.
So far though it's syncing and backing up everything from my iphone but only consuming just around 5MB of iCloud capacity, so those GB's might go a long way.
From what I've read, it's only syncing the unique data and not any of the apps/files themselves.
I haven't played any yet with the Lion iCloud backup though, but am really curious to see how quickly that starts eating up capacity.
Enough rambling....
Just thought I'd share my impressions/experiences so far and see who else is playing around with all this.
