ICH5R chip fried on Asus board

i have a computer with an Asus P4P800-E Delux motherboard

i was playing a game and i went to plug in my headset in the back of the PC, i had to unplug the speakers and then plug in the headset, the second i did the computer locked up and i smelled smoke

i immediately pulled the plug off the PSU and looked into it, my ICH5R chip was fried, heres a pic of what it looked like, not the exact one but i found this pic on the net and mine looks identical

any idea what could have caused this, i looked it up and havnt found anything that pointed me to the possible culprit

i'm waiting for Asus tech support to call me back, but i'm trying to find out as much information as i can on my own, because if it has to do with me plugging my headset in with the comp running, i think i'm gonna leave that info out of the conversation so i can get an RMA

thanks for your time and i appreciate any input you guys can give me
