ICF and File Sharing...is it possible?

I use a linksys router and I want to enable the ICF built into XP but I know it will kill my shares. Is it possible to open up the necessary ports in the advanced settings option to allow file sharing even with ICF enabled? I googled a port list and opened up 137 and 139, as suggested by a friend of mine, on both computers but that did not seem to work. Any information on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you have a Router ICF is useless.

ICF does not add to the Router. It is a partial Firewall and does not control traffic going out.

If you have security concerns you have to add a software Firewall like ZA, NIS, or similar.

Most software firewalls have a lot of flexibility in port opening etc.

Oh, ok. I didn't know that. The router and ICF only protect on incoming and not outgoing then? I don't have any security concerns, I was just curious if it was possible/useful to do both. Thanks for the information.
