IceWind Dale trilogy versus Baldur's Gate I/II

Hello guys, I am starting to get more and more into The Realms and with the latest games not living up to my expectations, I am looking more and more into the past for games that I missed out on during my CounterStrike days where if it was not a FPS, I did not play it.

Help me decide which one to get once my time with NWN is finished. I mainly care about plot and character development.

Also, either one of these games a clickfest diablo type game? If so, I dont think I want to play it unless the plot makes up for it.

Thanks!

Baldurs Gate at least is turn based, and I think IWD is too, so it can't really be a click fest, since you can pause the game.
Onlt played BG, so I can't really comment on the comparison, but it was fun, and since both are going to be super cheap might as well get them all.

Icewind Dale is a little more action oriented.
But I still prefer the complex plot and character interaction of the Baldurs Gate games.
Especially number 2 and the expansion, where all the characters get closure.

BG was a longer game, but had more gameplay involvement with NPCs and such. IWD seemed more fun to me, though, and was a little less tedious. Maybe this was so because I had a 4-person party, who knows...

BG 1 and 2 were 2 of the top 5 RPG's ever made in my opinion. Icewind Dale was good, but much more action oriented. Sounds to me like you will want to play the baldur's gate games.

Sounds to me like I want to play them again too 😱

Thats an apples to oranges comparison. IWD is an action heavy game, BG was more about the story line and characters. Both are good games, but I liked BG1/2 better personally.

Never actually beaten IWD2 yet, I've gotten insanely far, but haven't beaten it.

Oh, both games are really designed for a 6 person party. You can get away with fewer in IWD because you design all your characters. In BG, your party members are part of the rich tapestry of story and taking less than 6 limits the interpersonal interactions.

I liked BG1/2 more, especially BG2. Icewind Dale feels like it has very little story, and you create your entire party, instead of creating a main character and picking up allies. I think you can also create every character in BG too though, if you premake them and upload them.

IWD 1 was mindless and almost plotless fun, but nowhere near the entertainment value of BG 1/2. Be sure to get BG2 with the Throne of Bhaal expansion, it's a full game in itself and completes the story.

IWD is more hack and slash, BG2 had much better char development. Both are fun however, and serve their purposes.

Baldurs Gate is the best... I was dissapointed by Baldurs Gate 2..

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? bg2 was awesome!

I agree; BG2 was slightly better; higher levels were definitely better.

spellholdstudios.com and download baldur's gate 2 mods.

you can combined bg1 + bg2+ all the expansions into one game with added mods.

All infinity engine games are awesome. You might want to look at Planescape:torment if you really want to play manly for the story aspect.

I really liked BG2, a Sorcerer is always fun.
If you want story and character development, Planescape: Torment is (yeah, IMO etc.) the best game there is/was.
Too bad you can't run it in a resolution higher than 640X480, that's the only downside. Once you get into the game you'll come back changed. 😛

It didn't have the same flare, I'll give it a whirl again. I just really liked how my character developed in 1, I got rid of Khalid and Jahera (spelled right?) but in BG2 they were back at the beginning so it kind of ruined my taste for their start of the story... I was hoping they would have had a better beginning.

It's threads like these that make me wish there were more games like Baldur's Gate and Planescape coming out. Yes, a bunch of neat RPGs like KOTOR have come out, but they just haven't been nearly as good as the BG series.

I've kept Jaheira a couple times all the way through. The first time it was because I'd just finished BG1 and she was a character I could trust. The second time it was because I wanted to go through her romance. The Harper's quest that revolves around it is pretty cool. And she gets furious when you confront Irenicus, because he murdered Khalid. Its hard to keep the romance with her though because you have to keep your reputation so neutral. My rep is usually 20. 🙂

Adding PS:T after everyone voted is going to give it an unnaturally low vote.

PS:T is my all-time favorite CRPG in terms of story and open-ended game play. Some people do dislike it because there is "too much" reading, that it's almost a book in game form, but I enjoy a good fantasy novel too so I didn't mind.

Dang, that is a low resolution, can BG I/II go at least 1024x768? My monitor is 1600x1200 native and 1280x1024 is stretching it................

Well, I just bought Baldur's Gate II Ultimate Collection (the game and the expansion pack). I could not find a copy of BG I or PlaneScape.

Should be here in about a week (going to start the shadowlords/dreamcatcher series while I wait), thanks for the information guys, think I will be too far lost for not having played the first one if I start with the 2nd one?
