KMFJD

Lifer
Just saw this, if you want to see what driving the ring road in Iceland is like here's the whole thing

-
on the 2016 summer solstice, sigur rós unveiled a 24-hour ‘slow tv’ event live on iceland’s national television – and streamed live globally via youtube – set to a constantly evolving soundtrack based around elements of their latest song óveður. ‘route one’ is a 1332km journey the whole way round iceland’s coastal ring road, you can now relive that journey in full 1080p hd or 4k 360°.

Part 1

Here's a condensed version

I'll check it out when I get on a desktop. Love Sigur Rós. That was one of the the best concerts I've been to.

I've found Iceland is just TOO EXPENSIVE to enjoy.

How so? That doesn't match with what we experienced. I did look at of the costs again to see if they had changed since its been almost 2 years since we were there. Picked some dates in April and May and pretty easily found 3 star and 4 star hotels for $150 for weekend dates. Car rental was in the $35-40\day range. (FWIW when we went there were a fair number of Icelandic car rental places that don't show on OTAs. Those were about 15-20% less but I don't know if thats still the case). If you're just hitting up the top tripadvisor restaurants then yes food can be $30+ for dinner but you can find plenty of options below that. Yes its more work than some places but that doesn't mean you can't do a cheaper dinner.

Meanwhile there are tons of things to do in Iceland that are relatively cheap or completely free. Blue Lagoon too expensive? Try one of the other thermal baths. Still to expensive? Go to one of the free natural sites. There are no entry or parking fees for the majority of the amazing natural sites in Iceland. Gullfoss? Free. Strokkur? Free. Seljalandsfoss? Free. Thingvellir national park costs all of $4 for all day parking. We've been to plenty of places that charge significantly more to access waterfalls\parks\etc so, for us, this more than makes up for any higher food costs we incurred on the trip.

Alcohol was (and still is) expensive so if you just want to head there to booze it up then yeah it would be pretty expensive. Not sure why someone would go to Iceland to focus on that but *shrug*. Same thing for guided tours. Its incredibly easy to drive in Iceland and I'd rather not be subjected to someone else's schedule for nature areas but I'm sure some people do. Doesn't seem as expensive as some of your typical 'cruise ship' style excursions though.

Overall, to me, it still seems that Iceland isn't really that expensive. Is it more than an eastern european or central american country? Yes but its certainly not out of line with what a trip to Paris or London would cost
