"A move by the Bush administration to withdraw the last several U.S. Air Force fighter jets from Iceland has drawn strong objection from Icelandic authorities and threatened to disrupt relations with yet another NATO ally."

*Sigh* More complaints from "charity" cases. ;)

Why were they there to begin with? Seems like a good idea to remove them

They're complaining about losing their last 4 F-15's? That's their entire air defense? Go over to the Boneyard and give them some scrap planes or something, see what they can do with them...

I'm shocked, you actually put self-interest above all else. shocked! shocked! shocked!!!!!!!!!

I thought only neocons and/or americans had such greedy ambitions. never did I consider a socialist like you to be in league with us.

EDIT:But if that's your opinion, let's close the bases and watch you collect money from the local welfare office.

Iceland is a bizzarre place, I'd love to go there on vacation! I had no idea we have a base there, and don't know what good it provides us in the past 2 decades... but a contract is a contract.

But Iceland, which has no military, regards the aircraft as essential to its air defense and, even more important, as a symbol of a U.S. commitment to defend the nation.
Here's a serious question I have though. Isn't it about time for Iceland to step up to the plate in regards to its own defense? I don't know exactly what Iceland's commitments are as a NATO ally considering that it has no military. I am only left to assume that they are a NATO ally because they allowed us to place our military there. The world is a dangerous place, but isn't it time that Iceland invested in protecting itself instead of the continual reliance on the US?

1. Population is only around 270.000
2. We provide medical staff, engineers and other highly educated civilians for nato operations.

Who the crap wants to invade Iceland anyway? Do they even need to worry about defense?

Fair enough. Still, as a member of NATO, Iceland's defense is not in question, at least to me it doesn't seem so. NATO is redefining its mission in the wake of the Cold War and I think we'll see many more of these kind of issues pop up. IMHO, military assets should be based on defensive and logistical needs, not on economical considerations.

Got to be a lie. No one would want an American base in their country. In fact, I bet Iceland is right now brimming with terrorists pissed off at our base being there and with plans to kill random large groups of Americans.

Doesn't the Air Force punish Officers and Airmen by stationing them in Iceland? It's kind of a frozen Alcatraz for the Air Force isn't it?!
