How long does a typical container of ice cream last? How far out is the expiration date usually?

I picked up some Ben & Jerry's ice cream earlier today, and had a bit just a while ago. Something just seemed off, texture all wrong, stuff they throw in there had some powdery texture to it, like eating chalk. Looked at the bottom of the container and the sell-by or use-by date is Mar 10 12. :colbert:

Should the store take this back? It was just the local bodega, and they know me well enough so probably exchange it for me assuming I don't drop dead before getting a chance to bring it back, but are expiration date issues usually a buyer-beware thing or is the store responsible for getting 3 month old products off the shelves and out of the freezers?

Feel a little sick. :|

main thing with store icecream is whether its been thawed/refrozen from workers not getting them into the freezer fast enough.

use by date is for taste...

bringing back ice cream is just way way too much trouble lol

Either they have very slow sales rates, or else their workers aren't properly rotating the stock.

My money's on the latter. Rotating stock takes a little extra effort. It's easier to just keep pushing new product in front, and let the old stuff fossilize properly.
