IC7-G/Raptor can't complete XP install

Greetings:

I'm working with the following

IC7-g (Bios 16)
P4/2.4-C
1GB Corsair Twin-x (2@512)
Raptor on SATA1
2 @ Seagate 160gb SATA on SATA 3 and 4
Prolink GF 5900
the usual opticals, floppy, etc

I'm having a problem completing the XP install. I can boot the machine from the optical drive, format the raptor, and enter the XP installation program. XP will start installation, asking the usual questions. The problem comes when XP is attempting to complete the installation. THe machine will reboot as expected, but instead of booting into windows on the HD to complete the install, it just hangs. No HD activity, no display on monitor.

When I reboot the machine again from the optical drive and re-enter XP setup, the setup program "sees" XP on C: drive. It just can't get there to complete the install.

This is driving me crazy. I've tried to install with SATA/RAID drivers, when that didn't work I reformatted and tried without. I THINK I've got SATA turned on in BIOS but I've gone around on this so many times I don't trust myself anymore...

Any/all help, suggestions greatly appreciated.

you may have to set the SATA drive in the boot sequence manually. Otherwise, the BIOS won't even try to access the SATA drive to see whether an OS is loaded on it.

Done (I think)..problem persists. I have the raptor set as first in boot priority.

help....

I dont know if this is the case for you, but I had to load SATA drivers from a floppy when I installed XP on my raptor. You do this by hitting f6 at the beginning of the installation thing, otherwise Windows wont recognize the drive.

You gotta do the F6 deal, and u also gotta switch the primary drive from IDE to SATA or something of the likes. It's what i had to do to get my Raptors to boot WinXP.

Also it took me 3tried to install WinXP on a Raptor, so dun't b givin up hope yet!

Doesn't windows see the sata as a scsi device? Unless you made the sata channel primary or secondary. Then you lose the use of one ide controller.

Are you running 2 raptors in RAID 0? I just have a single Raptor on SATA 1.

I've tried every way I can to get bios/windows to see the raptor.

I used the F6/floppy during XP install and installed the intel SATA driver and Silicon Image SATA driver.

Here are the current bios settings. With these I can get to the windows boot screen (often) before the system reboots to bios.

Ch 1 Master: Samsung optical drive
Ch 2 Master: Pioneer optical drive
Ch 3 Master (a/k/a SATA 1): Raptor

under advanced bios features, I have the HD disk priority set at
1. CH2 M. WDC WD3606D (Raptor)
2. Bootable Add In Device (I switch this around from On Chip SATA to Onboard SATA to PCI device without apparent effect)

Under Integrated Peripherals
Onchip SATA mode is IDE
Onchip Serial ATA is Auto (or Enhanced, which I believe forces Ch 3 as master)

If someone has a working setup similar to mine and could confirm these bios settings I would be most grateful. This is absolutely driving me F'ing CRAZY.

Jeezus Its getting close...

Here's another data point:

Just for the hell of it I installed XP to the SATA Raid 1 setup on the promise chip (e.g. SATA 3 and 4). THe install went perfectly. Too bad I want the Raptor to be the C drive...

Should have tried setup with one optical drive and just the Raptor.

Great minds DO think alike! 😀

That was the next thing I tried. I pulled everything except one optical drive, the video card and the raptor. XP installed without a hitch. When everything was plugged in, BIOS saw the raptor as Channel 3 master. With just one optical drive, raptor became Chan. 2 master.

This is critical: because I am only running one raptor, I did NOT install the intel SATA RAID drivers at XP install (the much ballyhooed F6 procedure). On previous installs I had been installing these drivers. I figure I'll install the promise SATA RAID driver from within windows per the manual for the RAID1 setup later.

At this point, the clock said 0200 and I went to bed...😱

I can't declare success until everything is installed. However I feel like some progress has been made...This evening I will start plugging stuff back in, and hopefully all will be well. I think I will start with the second optical drive, then go to the soundcard...

This is a long post but there may be some info that will help:

Abit forums

Note that the original post refers to BIOS 1.1/1.3. read down thru the pages for the later BIOSes as BIOs 1.5 changed some of the available settings.
You could also do a search of those forums, there are quite a few posts dealing with the install issues.

There is also some good info on the install in a thread originated at the "alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.abit" newsgroup, do a Google search for

"Subject: IC7 G Noobie in tangle shock!"

It's another long one but has install procedures clearly defined.

good luck, hope this helps

Sorry for shouting, but THIS IS EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM I AM HAVING.

I have a Maxtor 160 gb hard drive (nfts) with windows xp home already installed. I'm trying to format the C: partition and reinstall windows, but when I boot to the windows cd it loads the drivers, etc., then right before it gets to the "what do you want to do" set up screen, everything stalls, not cd-rom activity, etc.

I can't for the life of me figure out what is causing this to happen.

Ginfest saves the day😀

The post at the Abit board that you found had the key, in a most innocuous phrase

"2. You may need to go back to the top of "Integrated Peripherals" screen, and set IDE Bus Master to "enabled." This setting may need to be enabled depending on your particular hardware setup. This one is optional."

I would change "optional" to MANDATORY, at least with my hardware configuration...with this change, everything fell into place--every drive was right where it was "supposed" to be...

heh.

I am now where I wanted to be--a single raptor on the "onchip" (to use abit-speak) SATA, and each optical as a master on its own IDE channel.

My further travails to set this system up may make for future posts. In the interim, Here are settings that for me made a difference. Full reference should be made to the link that Ginfest found. Now it is time for a ginfest of my own.

SOFTMENU
DDR SDRAM Voltage 2.7

ADVANCED BIOS
HARD DISK PRIORITY-bootable add in device (onchip SATA)

INTEGRATED PERIHPERALS
ONCHIP IDE DEVICE
IDE BUS MASTER-enabled
ONCHIP SERIAL ATA MODE-IDE
Onchip SERIAL ATA- ENHANCED
SERIAL ATA 1 MODE- IDE-3 Master
