iBooks - new version has anti-jailbreak measures

The newest version of iBooks for iOS devices contains a clever anti-jailbreaking measure. Apparently iBooks runs an unsigned app that would refuse to run on normal iPhones or iPads but will run on an JB'ed iPhone. I don't think it'll be long before we see similar measures in regular apps.

This may hurt them more than help. I don't have an ipad, but if I did part of the reason I'd have it is the ebook reader. I've also had an iphone long enough to know that it's worlds better while jailbroken. Knowing this, I wouldn't touch iBooks with a 10 foot pole and just use something else. I'd probably just substitute the Kinde app and call it good, and any books I would have bought on ibooks I'll just buy through Amazon.

They say it's more to prevent the stripping of DRM from the ebooks. I'm not sure how it's done via the ipad, but can't it also be done via the PC? Seems like people who WANT to strip the DRM will still do so anyway, and then just not use ibooks anymore.

I just don't get it...

why dont they just crack ibooks? if your jailbroken you can make the app it calls fail to run too? perhaps the new update just does that.

The updates to the article indicate that this isn't actually a change to iBooks, just that the methods of jailbreaking changed so this issue presented itself. Apparently the jailbreak has been updated so its not an issue anymore.

Interesting nevertheless.

Updates from the OP's article link:

UPDATE: as numerous commenters have spotted, that link goes to a release of redsn0w from the middle of 2010 that fixed a similar issue with iBooks but does not address this latest change by Apple. At present, there is no solution short of removing the jailbreak altogether, though Comex reports that he has a fix ready. We apologize for the error.

UPDATE2: several hours later, the iPhone Dev Team obliged us with PwnageTool 4.2 with a fix for the iBooks problem.

I typically always jailbreak but the reason to do so has been reduced over the years. With the jailbreak breaking apps and needing more and more workarounds. It's almost not worth it now unless you really like to customize your phone. I only have SBSettings and BiteSMS and 3g Unrestrictor as my go to JB Apps.

It's unethical on Apple's part. Jailbreaking is legal. While they're within their rights to restrict it, they're blocking people from reading books they've legally purchased from them. I think my current iPad will probably be the last iDevice I buy. They're too restrictive for my liking.
