iBook LCD/DVD-CD driver problem

I bought a used iBook 8 months ago and it ran out of AppleCare 6 months ago. So of course I am starting to have problems now. First my DVD-CD driver stopped working and "could not be found" and now my screen shuts off unless I squeeze the keyboard to the left on the mouse. I'm taking it in but I was wondering if anyone had this kind of problem, possible diagnoses, whether or not you think I'm crazy, etc.

Thanks!

The screen problem is a known problem for the dual-iBooks.
Basically the GPU socket becomes loose and falls off the mainboard,
but the connection is too fine to solder casually.

There is a workaround by opening up the back and inserting objects to
push the GPU into on to the mainboard but sooner or later it will fail.

There was a class action against this problem and Apple agreed to fix
affected models. My iBook had this problem and the serial number
matched the range of affected models but Apple somehow said it's not
covered and charged me $50 for the phone call :(

Apple gave me an estimate of $800 to fix.

You might be more lucky and could be elligiable for a free fix:
