iBook freezing after Airport

I just installed an Airport card into an 800Mhz G3 iBook running OS 10.2.6. I had Samba setup, and everything was working great.

I rebooted the machine just to give it a fresh boot. Now, it locks up at the gray apple screen after the tone. There is no progress bar, just the gray apple. I tried removing the Airport card, holding Shift while booting. What else can I do?

<--new to Mac environment

There are a couple of things you can do:

1. Press cmd-option-p-r during bootup to reset the pram. Reccomended procedure is to have it do this 4 times straight.
2. Manually select the startup disc, since the problem could be that it's forgotten about the startup disc. Hold down option to do this, but be warned it's a bit wierd.
3. Boot with cmd-v held; this will boot up OS X in verbose mode, which will give you an idea of what's going on. If it makes it to the point where you can see what verbose mode is doing, then it means the kernel loading, and it's now a software problem.

I tried all with no avail. What else to do?

When I do the manual select startup disc, the apple turns to a circle with a line through it. I'm assuming that's not a good thing.

It would indicate that it can't see the hard drive. Try booting off an OS install CD(hold down the C key durring bootup), and see if it detects the hard drive. If not, then go through the usual procedure of checking to make sure the hard drive is connected; you may have knocked it loose.

hold down apple-s and type in fsck -y, that might help repair a boot sector problem if the computer can't find a viable start up disk.

Humm, I haven't cracked open an iBook in a month or so, but I believe it's on the right hand side, towards the front of the laptop. Just remove the keyboard, and you should be able to see it.

I can't even get the apple-s command to work. I don't have access to a OS X cd either as this is property of school my mom works for. The hard drive isn't visible from the keyboard. I'm assuming that the bottom of the iBook needs to be removed to get to it.

You could always try calling Apple support, although you may not get support depending on how old the iBook is.

They aren't that bad.😉 I've dealt with them a few times for Sys Admin stuff, and they're just fine; Consumer Reports thinks the same way about their general support too, so I think you'll survive.😛

I was quite pleased with it. Every CSR I talked to spoke English very well, no hold times, and they seemed to be knowledgeable. Now, I just gotta find an OS X cd. I might have to wait till Monday...

Do you have access to another Mac? If so, I think I have an image of an OS X CD that you could burn to test with.
