I'm kinda dismayed that when I buy this, that not even 6 months later the newest OS won't run on it fully... should I worry? Is that new graphics technology a must have?

Hi,

I dont think you should worry. The iBook will support Tiger, but Core Image has to scale itself down to an appropriate level on lower end graphics cards. Not only that, you wont see those eye candy features, such as when you are using Dashboard, you wont see that liquidy effect thingy. I may not upgrade to Tiger, as Panther is a great OS. My eMac has the Radeon 7500, and your iBook probably has the Radeon 9200, so Tiger will be a lot better on the iBook than on my eMac.

I think its best to wait to see if anyone else has tried Tiger on their iBook, and see what they say. In my opinion, Tiger will run great, you just miss out on those eye candy features.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I'm buying probably in a couple of weeks...I need it before January and want some time to tinker with it and get it setup nicely first :)

Hi,

Good luck to you. I hope you enjoy the iBook. Sometimes I wish I bought an iBook instead of the eMac. Ive always wanted a laptop. :p

Why not spring for a 12" Powerbook if you're worried about core image?

base 12" (the newest 1.2ghz) ibook is like 830 at amazon shipped, base 12" powerbook as 1430 (cheaper than edu price) shipped. Is the powerbook really $600 better?

the prices at amazon are crazy after rebate, no tax no shipping. I might just get an ibook to tide myself over until g5 powerbooks comeout, whenever that'll be

I wouldn't worry about CoreImage - it's mainly there for apps like Motion. And Tiger will still run more quickly overall than Panther as it is!

And as far as the iBook vs. PowerBook thing goes, if you're going for a 12" system it's more effective to get the iBook unless you want DVI out. Be sure to order from Apple, though, if for no other reason to get a larger hard drive. 30 GB runs out quickly!

For anything more, it's better to move straight to the 15" PowerBook. The faster CPU comes along with a larger display, a faster video chipset, and more ports.
