iBook 12'' vs HP dv1000

I want a good notebook for around $1,000. What has scared me away from the dv1000 is the fact that it can be scratched easily, from what I've heard. Also concerned about the build quality. I know the iBook's durability is very good. But I do like the widescreen on the dv1000. The OS doesn't really concern me. Please help me out though. I'm going to buy whichever system with 256RAM and purchaes 1GB separately. Hard drive will both be 60GB. Again, my only beef with the dv1000 is the customer complaints and scratching/durability. I'll just be browsing the internet, typing some papers. I'd like the capability to watch videos/music and I'd want long battery life. Any advice would be great. Thanks a lot.

I have an iBook G4 and it's great. If you're concerned about the dv1000, get the iBook because they are extremely sturdy and hard to scratch. The 12" screen isn't too bad, you get used to it. I manage to watch DVDs on it without any problems in terms of size.
I personally don't like HP, because I've had bad dealings with them recently (compatibility between a monitor and computer, both HP), and their customer support sucks. Their OEM installations of Windows aren't even done according to the Microsoft guidelines (I'm an OEM, and so I know).

i have the newest 12" ibook and its awesome except its very heavy for a 12" laptop, I also have a thinkpad X31 and thats about 1.5lbs lighter, and the fact that it doesn't have DVI out.

heavy? well, compare it to my last laptop that was about 7lbs (I think that's right, I use metric so it was 3.5kg). It was 15" tho (Clevo M400S). the iBook is a nice change from that 😛
