"IBM will replace any defective drive with a like drive. IBM does not
perform any upgrades."

So were people lying when they said they got 60GXPs as replacements when they sent in their defective 75GXPs?

Are there ANY 75GXPs that do not fail prematurely???
Am I basically sh*t out of luck with my defective 75GB 75GXP???

That's roughly the official policy of all drive makers. However, if an identical drive is not available they will often either give you a more recent drive or bump you up a size. They cannont refuse a replacement, so I'm sure IBM has the same unwritten policy.

Interesting.

I sent them a 75GB 75GXP and according to the USPS they received it this morning.

How long should it take for them to send out a replacement? 2 months?

The next closest drive they have is the 80GB 120GXP, but I'm not sure if I'd get that or another soon-to-die 75GB 75GXP.

I don't know, I've never dealt with an IBM drive. Just because it isn't a current product doesn't mean they don't have internal stock. They probably have plenty of 60GXP's lying around, and older drives they've refurbished as well.

There are no 75GB 60GXPs though...

would they give me a smaller drive?

The problem is all of the 75 and 60 GXPs are crap.

If they sent me a replacement refurbrished, its basically going to fail (its inevitable). :(

I like IBM and all, but it took forever to get a replacement when I rma'd my 75gxp (60G). I believe that they sent me one from Malaysia or someplace like that. It must of went by boat. It took like a month until they acknowledged that they had received the bad one. When I got the replacement, it was the same model and refurbished. It is unused waiting until I need it (emergency). Currently, I am using two 60gxp (60g x 2) and they work great.

No, you won't get a smaller drive. They can upgrade at their discretion, they cannot downgrade at their descretion.

Roger that.

I'm just strapped for case and can't afford a new $100+ hard drive.

I'm just hoping they give me a half-way decent drive that doesn't die.

The 75GB 75GXP I sent in was made in Hungary. They received it this morning at their warehouse, but they said the RMA # isn't showing in their database just yet.

I got a 30GB 60GXP back after I had RMA'd a 30GB 75GXP. I sent mine to their Europe RMA Center in the Netherlands.

I *think* that my buddy returned 2 75's and got 120's back.

That was just a few weeks ago.

I would imagine that IBM is upgrading at their discression. Need to give peeps a reason to buy again.
