IBM's New 60gxp hd's, Faster than 75gxp's?

The 60GXP has a 20Gig/Platter, the 75GXP is 15Gig/Platter so the STR is higher on the 60GXP.

The seek times are the same AFAIK and in most cases in normal use seek time is a much bigger factor than STR for overall performance.

So the 60GXP is a bit better, but not really much.

(The number 60 vs 75 is just the max size that series comes in and has little to do with which is better, there is a 5 platter 15gig/platter version, the 20gig/platter version only comes in up to 3 platters so the number is smaller)

Since the 60 has only 3 platters it will probably be faster than a 75 with 5 platters. I read this interesting thing at storagereview.com, and they said that seek times increase when there are more platters because the head is heavier.

The accuracy goes down with a heavier head, so it takes longer to position it. They found that a 75GB GXP was slower than a 45GB GXP because it has more platters.

Yeah civiox has a good point.

Less platters is better, slightly better seeks, and less heat and noise output (and less chance something will go wrong) the 45gig is faster than the 75Gig (both 75GXP family) so a 60Gig 60GXP would probably be about equal for seeks to a 45Gig 75GXP (both 3 platter) and a 40gig 60Gxp to a 30gig 75Gxp (both 2 platter)

So the 60GXP probably is the better choice.
