omg, I am getting afraid. I just built a whole new rig and purchased a IBM 120GXP HD along with it. I had originally planned on the Maxtor DX740 series but based my decision from benchmarks and recommendation from StorageReview. I have been using the IBM HD for over two weeks now, leaving the PC on 24/7.

Should I return this drive? It doesn't show any problems yet, but I don't want to wait around for a disaster. I know of two ppl who have 60GXPs with no problems whatsoever...So i dunno. I bought this HD as OEM from newegg...will they exchange my hd w/ something else ya thinK? Should i even bother?

The saga continues :D

The last of my IBM drives (a 61.4GB 75GXP) is still going, but I've had to do LLF's several times in the last year. And the clicks and grinds are a bit scary. Fortunately, there's absolutely nothing sitting on the drive mission criticial.

I can certainly agree with the authors' assertion: avoid IBM hard drives. The first thing that struck me about the 75GXP series was how damn hot they ran. I'm certain that has something to do with the high failure rate, considering few people think about a cooling solution for a 7200rpm IDE hard disk. 45C-ish is not uncommon for these drives, much higher than the competition.

Well my actively cooled (CoolDrive bay by CoolMaster) 60GXP 60GB died 2 days ago. Can't see how it's heat related, I always keep my HDs cool and this is the 3rd IBM drive that died on me in 1 year. If it IS heat related even after active cooling then ... we are stuffed.

I bought both of my 75GXP's when they first came out (like THAT week) and they're still running along without a problem. I've never heard them grind, I have ZERO bad sectors, and I have never had to LLF them. I have a 30GB and 75GB. That 75GB gets a workout too, lol.

Now I am scared... I have a TravelStar DJSA-210 in my Dell notebook...

Recently it has been making very faint whirling noises every so often. I don't know if they were always there or if I'm just hearing them now. :(

From what I've heard, you don't have to be really worried about their laptop hard drives. The failure rate is relativly normal on those drives...at least compared to the desktop GXPs :)
