although i like them both, personally i'd rather have one of ibm's power4 based computers. hopefully, with increasing competition between the two, the prices will come down enough so that they're affordable.

For throwing money away, I side with SGI because they always have good looking cases

Granted, SPARC's and POWER based boxes are high quality stuff(mostly), but still...for a workstation, what would you use it for?
I don't know about AIX, but Solaris isn't all that for day to day workstation use, unless you have some programs that just love extremely stable 64 bit platforms.
And if you're gonna run Linux on it, why not just get a good x86 box?
