Does IBM archive any manuals or repair guides for a Selectric 72 typewriter? My dad wasted $5, but I figured I'd humor myself.

well, if it was only $5 i'd just take it apart and try and trace the problem back to its source. these things are built like bricks...chances are its a small thing you may be able to fix..
