IBM to market new colors to expand notebook customer base

IBM aims to expand its customer base for its notebooks by introducing models with new color schemes worldwide in the fourth quarter of this year, according to Hank Horng, president of the personal systems group at IBM Taiwan.

IBM?s new notebooks to be launched in the fourth quarter will include models available in colors that appeal to general consumer groups, Horng said. Horng did not specify which colors would be available.

Here's another interesting tidbit...

The new models may also be available in a non-IBM brand, Horng added. For example, IBM partnered with LG Electronics in 2003 to launch an ?LG IBM? silver-colored X-Note brand notebook.

Could this mean they might expand availability of models like the Xnote LM50?

It doesn't say they're getting rid of the black designs, they're just expanding with more choices. I'm sure most of the ones they sell will keep the traditional look. It is still IBM and "business" is their middle name, so I don't think you have to worry about pink Thinkpads.

If the Xnote is any indication of the direction they might go with their new designs, I'm looking forward to see what they come up with.

1.. Hearing this from IBM Taiwan could lead us to believe that these TP's possibly WON'T be worldwide models.

2. Generally anything that happens across brand at IBM (with the PC's anyway) gets announced out of RTP.

Yeah, I wasn't clear on the use of "worldwide" in this context either. It could mean "various countries around the world," rather than all IBM markets.

Real speculation on this though.. "The new models may also be available in a non-IBM brand, Horng added. For example, IBM partnered with LG Electronics in 2003 to launch an ?LG IBM? silver-colored X-Note brand notebook."

Highly unlikely that IBM would launch one of those in western markets. I imagine they do that to be even more competitive in other markets --meaning other than the Americas and Europe.
