IBM to manufacture processors for ps3, gc2 and xbox2?

I cannot believe how little of a coverage this is getting. I read the article in gamesindustry.biz yesterday (which, for some reason i am unable to get today) and this today. imo this is a major news event. Anyone have any more information on this at all?

Yeah, this should be getting more cover. It's different chips in every system, but IBM is apparently making all 3. I thought Sony was going to do their CPU "in-house" like the last one. I guess not!

IBM has always been a blue chip stock 😛 Still, they should make a bundle of profit on this. The down side is that it may decrease the quality on their part because they just don't give a damn. Also, if (Console maker) fails to please IBM, IBM could cut them off from chips.

The PS2 is a MIPS based chip isn't it?

There are still a number of unknown factors.

There's no guarantee yet that IBM is working with Nintendo for the next generation. That was never announced. The GameCube uses a modified G3, but if Nintendo wanted to stay with the same processor family, they could use a Motorola PPC for the next system.

The IBM-MS announcement was vague. For all we know from the press releases, IBM may be manufacturing some kind of CPU, but not R&Ding them. For example, ATI is licensing graphics for the Xbox2, but they're not actually manufacturing the graphic chips.

The PS3 will have IBM's "cell" which we know IBM did R&D. So, still, IBM is double-dipping at the very least in some way.
