IBM has a deal for first time buyers in which you can get an X or T model for 20% off and 14% off the other models, R, A, and G.

Call 800-656-0833, option 3 and ask for a sales representative.

Did you get yours yet? I'm curious if these have line-in (stereo) to the built in "sound card." I use that for recording MP3's using Total Recorder (cheap software), from external stereo sound sources. I do this with my PC's and want this capability in a laptop. Most laptops only have mono (microphone) input. I presume that extras like CD-RW and combo drives are available (I also require CD-RW).

People who have Thinkpads like their durability and claim that they are well made. You can check out the laptop newsgroups for comparisons.

The R series doesn't have the titanium shell though...just cheap plastic. T series is the REAL thinkpad...

I work with IBM Thinkpads everyday.

T30's are nice, but I would recomend spending a few more $$ and geting a T40. Better battery life, better speed with applications, and we've had much fewer problems with them per month of service than the T30 line.

There is no reference to this on their site. Can someone confirm? The T40 has $300 off web price on the site. Is this what you are referring to? If not, will this promo stack with the 20 percent off?

The 20% off is an ongoing deal for first time buyers. It has to be done on the phone. The reason to act before 8-4 is to get an additional $200 bundle.

turns out they won't stack the $300. it's for online only and 20% on a T40 is more than $300.

Aw man...I thought you could actually get 300 off the regular price, and then get 20% off of that price. If anyone gets this to work, PLEASE let me know ASAP.

if anyone gets the 300 dollars off and the 20% off stacked please let me know the extention and name of the rep that let you do it.

Also let me know the extention of any rep who lets you take 20% off of the express models (the express models supposedly can't get 20% off)

Because if I were to try it and it worked, I would be obligated to buying it...which is good, but my pops wouldn't be too pleased with me buying it without his permission (since it is his money).

Guys

If you are looking for the best deal, go for the express model. The sales rep can give you a 5% discount over the webprice. There is nothing that could beat the price of express models, not even a 20% discount.

For example 2379D6U (T40) with a 5% discount will cost you 1855. An equally configured T40 from website (with the 20% discount) will cost you 2238$.

(Ok, there is a speed difference of 0.2 GHz, the express model is 1.4 GHz. but for centrino, this difference is immaterial because most of the time the cpu is running at 300MHz range anyway).

BTW, if you do want to load up the computer, going with the preconfigured model will be chaper than the custom configured models. (e.g. 237391, 237392, or 2373G1U). Do the math yourself.

is it possible to have a 14.1" screen that has a higher resolution than 1024x768?

it depends on the model. go to the Start page from the OP to the model you want and click on "Let me build it"
