IBM Thinkpad X31 question

I was wondering....how would I get an OS onto this machine if I did not want to purchase the docking station? I know it has its own little partition with the OS on it but what if I wanted to make my own installation? Without an optical drive or a networked ghost image my choices seem slim.

I had a T40 for a while and I remember it saything that it supported a bootable USB item...does this mean that all I would need would be some CD-ROM with a USB connection or would it still have issues with drivers and such?

thx for the links I'll look them up. Umm I no longer have my T40 becasue I got the SXGA+ version and I totally could not see well. my eyes started to hurt after 10 min of looking at the screen becasue it kept on refocusing. Next time it will be all about 1024x768.
