I'm very tempted to get this for $2,846.35 through the Employee Purchase Program. The regular web list price is $4,379 :Q Crazy savings :p Anyways, what do you guys think of it? This is gonna be the first or second batch of Thinkpads with the 2.10GHz so a part of me says "wait for a little while.. prices may drop and (if any) production errors will be corrected in the future" but I know Thinkpads are solid and with a customer service like IBM's, I don't think I'll have any problems. Anyone has a laptop with the 2.1GHz processor?

Love my T41p... That looks like an awesome machine. I have 1,7 and 14,1" (1400x1050) and no fingerprint scanner, other specs are same.

I'd say go for it. For that price, it's a killer deal. Even if you decide you don't want later, you'll break even or even make a tidy profit off of it. What's to lose?

Those are tremendous machines, but DAMN are they expensive! A T42 configured like the 600m I just bought for $800 (during the Dell $750-off deal) is "on sale" for more than $2K. I would love to have a T42, but I can't really say I think it's 250% better than my Dell.

Dang that's expensive.

Is the 2.1 that much faster than the 1.7?

If you've got the cash to burn go for it. What the heck it's only money. Has IBM improved it's screen at all on this latest round?

The 2.1 is probably considerably faster. Remember, the Pentium M is like the G4 or G5 chip: it focuses on efficiency rather than raw clock speed. So a gain of 400 MHz here matters more than it would if this were a Pentium 4.

The T42 above is actually the T42P, of which, to the best of my knowledge, Dell has nothing like it.

Comparing the 600 to the T42 is fair enough, but in the 600 series there is no "p" competition from Dell.

What p'ness are you talking about wacky?

The highres screen? Any of the dell WUXGA+ screens kicks the Ps but

1920x1200 and brighter

The crappy autocadrific cad graphics card

If you want cad on the dell there is the Dell Precision Mobile Workstation M60 with the Nvidia quatro

If you are getting the firegl card because it is really only a Radeon 9600 128m in disguise, you can get that card on a dell 8600 for a lot less.

Now if you are paying $3g because it's an IBM and at least it's not a dell and it looks cool, that makes sense, for power/bang for the buck it doesn't.....

Yeah, I know - I had gone to the IBM page to look up comparable machines. Mine is similar to a T42, which is where I got the price I mentioned. I know my Dell is simply not as well-built as a T42, and other things being equal I'd take the IBM ten times out of ten, but the difference in cost is tough to justify. In all fairness, the $750-off promotion led to some pretty remarkable fire-sale prices on Dells, and if I were paying their standard "sale" price, the difference would be less dramatic.

DonVito: The Dell deal was a killer deal, I understand :) If I was aware of such a deal, I'd have gotten one too :)

Amdguy: A friend works for IBM and the EPP is for family/friends of IBM employees :)

Alansan: If you let me know what exactly you want, I can configure & price it but I cannot get it for the EPP price as I am not an IBM employee. A friend is helping me out :)

Amdguy

If you don't know anyone who works for IBM, another way to get good deals is to buy ibm stock

their share holder prices are as good or better than the EPP program
