So I know someone who bought a Thinkpad T42 from IBM and as an accessory from IBM he also bought the Kensington Microsaver laptop lock. So he says he tried to fit the lock in the littler slit/slot on the side of the laptop but it doesn't seem to go all the way in to the slot. Has anyone had any problems with this or could it be that his lock is just defective or maybe the slot on the laptop where the lock goes?

I don't have access to the laptop so I can only tell you what I am being told by my friend.

Thanks.

Fairly normal for the lock not to fit on very tight. He's got the one with the rubber boot on the lock right?

Thanks for the reply. I will ask him about whether it's the one with the rubber boot. The thing is that I have an HP laptop with a Kensington lock(not sure which one) and the lock goes all the way into the slot. When I lock my laptop the lock is kind of loose but my friend says that he can't lock his lock because the lock doesn't go into the slot fully.

Hmm.... does he have it turned to the unlocked position first???

You're talking about having the lock turned into the unlocked position first? I'll ask him because he said yesterday that he was able to lock the laptop once but he wasn't able to do it again, lol.

I have the old style Kensington lock and the new one. The old one set flush with the Thinkpad. The new one has got a gap, which is what the rubber boot on it will fill up, but it will still be loose compared to the old style.

I've used these locks on hundreds of ThinkPads.... Literally... No kidding on that number. (We do event marketing and have three or four TP's locked up on average at a time - for the last seven years)////// Never had a TP where the lock didn't work.

Hey Josh, i just got my Thinkpad and Microsaver lock a little less than two weeks ago. It is very very difficult for me to lock the darn thing. I've locked it possible three times total. I've spent up to thirty minutes in the library trying to lock it to no avail. I also have the same problem, whic his that the lock wont go in deep enough.

When it does work, it just seems to randomly work based on some wiggling.

BTW, what is the "unlocked position" for those of you who have suggested that?

Thanks

You have to unlock it in order to insert it fully into the ThinkPad in order to lock it. When it is fully in the unloacked position, both metal tabs will be aligned and you will not be able to remove the key.

Hey Wackydan,
Yeah I finally figured it out by accident after struggling with it for literally 20 minutes.

I don't know what metal tabs you are referring to being aligned, but i figured out what the unlocked position is

Josh: When you stick the key into the lock, the tab on the key goes into the little slit on the lock. After inserting the key into the lock, rotate it 90 degrees clockwise. Make sure you are holding the lock so that only the key is turning. When the key is turned, you will see that the tab is no longer inline with the slit that you stuck it into originally. Now, you can easily insert the lock into the thinkpad slot.

When you stick the lock into the thinkpad slot, turn the key 90 degrees counterclockwise, to its original position. And your lock is now securely fastened to your thinpkad. Let me know if this helps.
