Hello,
I am helping a friend of mine with his IBM Thinkpad R40 laptop. He has had this laptop quite a while, and recently had a power issue with it. When the machine is plugged into the AC adapter, it runs fine, but the second it is disconnected, it shuts off immediately (just shuts off, no shutdown process). So, he thought the battery was shot and purchased a replacement. However, using the new battery, the laptop is doing the same exact thing.
So, I am now looking at it. When I turn it on (with the battery installed) and the AC adapter plugged in, I can go to the power options and see that it does not recognize any battery is installed. It shows the same thing, regardless of the battery I have installed. Also, I tried another IBM adapter I have, and the results are once again the same. I tested the voltage of each adapter, and they are both testing good with the correct voltage.
So, now I am left thinking it is either the actual port where the adapter plugs into (but I think that would be weird as it recognizes the charger being plugged in fine). Or, I believe there is some type of board that goes between the battery and the motherboard (http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-Thinkpa...657?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35cbbd4d69).
Any idea's on what may be bad here? I know this is an older machine, so my friend doesn't wanna shell out a bunch of money guessing on parts. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
