IBM Thinkpad laptop problem

I have a IBM thinkpad 240
First the hard drive went when it went into hibernate. It just wouldn't come out of hibernate. Then I put in a new Hard drive which let the system boot to next stage where it would detect a floppy in the floppy drive . I think it needs a new floppy but I'm not sure and I have no other system to to test it with. It worked in the past but I believe that it failed just like the original hard drive did. Does anyone have experience with these IBM thinkpads with the external floppy and Parallel port CDrom!
The bios wont let me choose a boot config. When I try to boot off a cd I try to hit the space bar with my oem w98 disc or any bootable disk but no luck. If I try to boot off a floppy, I hear the floppy access and see the floppy lite but nothing happens on screen...which leads me to believe the floppy or controller is bad or possibly the floppy cable. Any ideas? anybody know any work arounds?:disgust:
