IBM Thinkpad issue

Okay, so here is the issue. One of our developers' IBM Thinkpad T42's backlight sponataneously went out for some reason. Now when you reboot, it displays fine up until Windows gets past its loading screen. This leads me to believe that there is a setting somewhere that is screwed up, not a hardware issue. Any ideas?

Boot into safe mode and make sure he didn't set the screen resolution incorrectly. Also, try updating the video drivers.
