GPS Computers has a HORRID rating at reseller ratings, and recently only sold with paypal. Now, since their shop with Yahoo! seems to work again, you can give it a shot with a credit card, and then dispute the charges should this be a scam.

I know there have been alot of posts regarding GPS computers. Some people do claim they recieved their merchandise so I thought I would post this, partly thinking that if it was a scam, Anandtech would be helpful in shutting them down.

A while back, these guys were selling top of the line laptops for like $500 each, but they only accepted paypal. Whether or not you are aware, disputing charges with paypal is an arduous task, and alot of people figured they lost their merchant account (due to so many complaints) and had to turn to Paypal to accept credit cards.

So, the link to their laptop page is

http://www.gpscomputersvcs.com/lapnot.html

Give it a shot if you are brave. I am actually still considering it myself since I'm pretty sure I have zero liability on my credit card.

Ditto, i will pass on the hassle.

I'll rather be saving for that new tiny fujitsu P series laptop, it would be a sweet mobile dvd player

Be aware that even disputing with your CC when dealing with GPS can be an arduous task. I had to dispute charges on an order last year and they lied about sending my order. Luckily I had all my documentation necessary to prove them wrong. It dragged out for several months. I'm not sure it's worth it even for several hundred dollars.

I think i'm going to order a laptop from them using my American Express Blue. I feel pretty safe doing it using AE. Can someone give me some input on the best deal out of the laptops they have. I'm leaning towards one that has a dvd and cdrw in one. The Toshiba description seems to be unclear as it says in it dvd and cdrw, but my limited research says it's just a dvd. Anyone else thinking of making a purchase with them using AE?

At the amazingly unbelievable prices they have, any of their laptops would be a steal. If you actually get it, that is....

I guess using your credit card directly could cover your back, better than PayPal. I emailed GPS and actually got an email back saying that they don't stock the laptops themselves. They said that they order them from somewhere....and it would take 45 days :( I emailed back, asking if they would charge my credit card before they shipped, and I got no reply.

Buyer beware!

45 days is a long wait and i bet they don't include weekend days in that figure. I was wondering if we could pricematch with American Express Blue. Buy from a known reputable company and pm to gps? Hmmm...that could work but the max pm difference AE would send you is $250 i think. I sent them an email about an hour ago and asked several questions. I will wait to hear their response before i do anything. I fogot to ask them if they wait to charge your cc until it ships so will send a followup email and see what they say.

pretty dumb and stupid according to you, i guess. But if i do order i'm really not worried about it because i'd use the AE cc. I certainly wouldn't order it any other way!

"if it looks to good to be true..."

people use your heads. simply put, why would a retailer sell so cheap when they could consistantly make more money on e.bay?

from all the posts in the past it looks like they make thier money from the people that simply give up on getting the merchandise. They are told to wait and wait until 60 days is passed and they can no longer dispute it with thier credit card. they seem to come through for the people that really put up a fight, to keep the law off thier tracks I assume.

but there could be a good deal in this if you order from a reputable dealer and use Amex Blue to price-match, has anyone done this?

If someone orders why would you wait 60 days to do the dispute? I'd definitely do it in the timeframe!

I've gotten some amazing deals that sounded too good to be true.

If after an order is placed, I don't receive the goods, 5 minutes and a 34 cent stamp will insure that I will be back to where I started.

Personally I know how to work the CC system and have zero fear that I could possibly lose more than the cost of the stamp. Furthermore I won't be sitting around wringing my hands and eagerly awaiting my new laptop. If it comes, fantastic, great deal. If not, so what. No tears, no anger, no big lesson learned, no hot deal.

No different than trying to get one of the many freebie t-shirt offers.

I'll keep you posted.

taser, they charge your CC and then tell you it takes 45 days for them to get it. then over the course of 2 weeks they tell you they shipped it, didn't ship it yet, had some information mix up, will look into it, etc then oops its allready been 60 days. at least thats what i gather from many posts in the past about this place. i mean if you saw a place online selling a brand new BMW for $10,000 would it be a good deal?

austonia, i don't understand why you'd wait til the 60 days elapsed to file the complaint. Just file before the deadline....what's stopping you from doing that?

I just ordered 10,000 laptops. I will be able to ebay them for at least a $300 profit each. That's a cool $3 million in my pocket :) Only $15.00 shipping for all those laptops too!

taser, there is nothing stopping you from doing that. but then you have to deal with fraud paperwork and it will affect your rating with that particular credit company, if you care. also, many people are not as sharp as yuo and get strung along until it is too late.

i guess i don't understand what you are saying. What do you mean by fraud paperwork? Are you saying that i would be committing fraud in some way? I don't believe you people in here. First i'm called dumb and stupid and now i'm accused of possible fraud? Geeeeez......

I was pointing out that if THEY don't send YOU a laptop, you have to call the CC agency and report the merchant has defrauded you. Usually they will give you provisional credit and send you paperwork that you must sign. Even though it isn't your "fault" i believe it does lump you into a somewhat higher-risk catagory because it may indicate that you use your card at places that are more likely to misuse the CC information. CC users are catagorized so that CC agencies can use statistics to calculate how "risky" you are.

PeterPan76, did you get the IBM Thinkpad or one of the other ones? After checking them all out some say free shipping and some don't.
