IBM T42 Windows XP Reinstall

Hi, I'm selling my laptop and I was wondering if I can get any copy of Windows XP Pro disc, use the key on the laptop COA, and sucessfully reinstall Windows.

Please advise me on this situation.

Was your laptop originally shipped with XP Pro? You'll need an OEM copy at least; OEM keys won't work with retail or upgrade CDs.

probably not. do you have rescue discs that came with the laptop? you could try to get a hold of an OEM disc and try installing with that, but it is definitely not guaranteed that it will work.

That version of XP is tied to your laptop and isn't licensed for use on other hardware....

Copy the i386 folder to a cd and reformat, then copy back to hdrive and install from that.
You will have to go thru activation this way with the coa on bottom of tp.
or
Get the i386 folder from ant xppro oem disk and follow the above instructions.
or
Your t42 should have a blue Access ibm button on it and pressing it at boot will allow you to bring it back to factory from the hidden partition with a clean install and no activation. This is easiest
or
Go to ibm website and download the latest rescue and recovery software. With that you can make restore cd's with no activation.

Oops, I think I misunderstood the question. You want to do a clean install on the existing hardware and include the existing copy in the sale.... Sorry!

T42's come with a built in utitility to build a OS restore cd. that would be the easiest way to do it.

Any Win-Xp pro cd should work, remeber the cd serial number doesn't mean anything if you use your own COA, so as long as you use your own COA you should be ok, and also download all of the software from IBM's support site, and that should get the laptop back to the original state.

Also if you can't gain acess to a win-xp copy try going to some computer stores ( small ones preferably) and explain to them that you have a COA and you only need acess to a cd to install, bring your laptop wiht you for proof, and maybe you can install it there for a nominal charge if any.

not true, win xp product keys are specific to the type of windows xp you have purchased. oem and retail for example are different you cannot activate a retail with an oem product key or vice versa.

Have you tried it, I never had to but I asked this on the forums and ppl all agreed that it can be done easily. You just put your COA in the activation and you should be set, if that doesn't work call the activation help desk, tell them that you lost your restore CD, and that you have another Xp pro cd available and give them your COA, you do realise that the COA is a license that gives you the legal right to use Win-xp pro regardless if it's oem or not it's win-xp pro and that's all that counts legally, they both have the same EULA right ? on that Laptop. If they say NO threaten court action.
