IBM T40 slow share connects

Just got a new T40. It works great, but when connecting to a share on another machine (same subnet) it takes several minutes to display the explorer screen, the explorer screen just hangs there, all white. When it comes up it's full speed. Same result whether connecting using the machine name or an IP.

If I connect at a command prompt (net use x: \\machine\c$) it connects right away, but when I go to explorer and click on a folder on the remote machine I have the same problem... a white explorer screen for several minutes.

I'm using a wired lan, and have temporarily disabled the wireless and turned off the radio. Ideas?
