IBM T40/p with 5400rpm HDD

I can't help but notice that the 5400rpm HDD (40GB) in the T40p is much louder than the 80GB 4200rpm in the regular T40. IBM already sent me another HDD and the new one seem to be worse :( Does anyone with 5400rpm HDD feel that it is a little bit noisy? The one came with the laptop is Hitachi. The idle noise (i.e., when the hdd is not seeking) is low tone but can be heard from about a foot away from the hdd itself. The seeking noise, on the other hand, is quiet. The replacement HDD is IBM travelstar brand (actually Hitachi now but it is an IBM model where the first one is Hitachi model). This one is a little bit quieter when idle (just a little bit) but the seeking noise is very loud. THe best HDD in term of noise is the IBM Travelstar 80GN 80GB. It is very quiet in both idle and seek mode.

What is your experiences toward this issue?
How loud is you IBM T40/p HDD?
Can you hear the idle sound when in a quiet room?
What about the seeking noise, can you hear it in a quiet room?

Mocca -

1) Mine is deadly quiet. The fan for my laptop is louder than any sound the HD may make... The seek is this light clicking sound that barely beats a paper clip dropping - about the same volume...

3) In a quiet room, all I hear is air moving through my machine.

4) Seeking can be heard, but is very quiet.

I find the idle noise of my 5400RPM 40Gb to be fairly loud too. Not a whine though, but more of a "wooshing sound." Doesn't bother me thought. It's audible to about a foot or so.

I love the 80GB one :) It is dead quiet and very fast as well. I might get an 80GB HDD and use the standard 40GB for the back up in an USB2.0 enclosure. The 40GB 5400rpm is much more louder than the 80GB one.

Which model does it show up in on the Device Manager list in System Control Panel? Mine is a IC25N040ATCS05-0, and I love it. Yours?
