IBM T23 Mini PCI Question..

My T23 has built in ethernet via RJ45 and 56K via RJ11. If I install a wireless MINI PCI card, would I be disabling the ethernet and modem? Also do I need some kind of mini antenna to go with it?

No you will not be disabling the other nic/modem. They will remain as they are. It is basically just like pluging in a new PCI card into your desktop.

I purchased a mini PCI wireless card for my laptop as well, and when it didn't get a signal I figured out the reason was that you DO need some mini antennas to get a signal. These antennas can be purchased online in the 25-35 dollar range. They plug into two small ports on the card.... "Main" and "Aux". The antennas are basically wires that need to be fed through the laptop and up the sides of the LCD panel. (this will require dissasembling the LCD bezel and some other components of your laptop. Not too tricky, but if you have never done it before you risk damaging your unit.

Jeez that sounds like a pain in the fvckin ass although I've disassembled laptops completely before. I just don't think I'll have the time for that..might as well use a pcmcia card like I am now. It just gets in the way when I want to use usb2/firewire cards so I have to remove the wifi card each time. Thanks for the quick reply.

NP I said the same thing. I just use a USB Wifi adapter to keep my PCMCIA slots free for Firewire. D-Link DWL-122 You may want to check that out. IT actually gets a better signal than any of my PCMCIA cards ever did.

You ever try a Linksys WPC54G pcmcia card? I had one before and it had killer range compared with a few others I've tried including a Netgear WG511 and a B version of that Linksys card. Also you wouldn't happen to know Linux compatibility with the DWL-122 would ya?

No I haven't, I've tried, a D-Link G, a Microsoft B, and a SMC B card. They all had about the same sucky range...

The DWL-122 is confirmed to work under a bunch of Linux distros. I know SUSE 9.1 and up supports it, and My guess is that any modern distro would have drivers available for it.
