I'm looking at two laptops, one from dell one from ibm. The difference in price after the dell e-coupon is $427. The features are more or less the same. Only difference is the IBM is 1.5ghz and the dell is 1.6ghz.

Is the ibm worth it. That is a ton of money.

Dell: 3 year mail in warenty and accidental damage protection
IBM: 3 year depot warenty

nothing with either is on site

shipping and tax are about equal, since I'm in California the sales tax is killing me but there is no way around that with these laptops.

the IBM is probably going to be a bit more sturdy. however I own a 600m and am very pleased with it. haven't had any problems so far and the money i saved by going with the 600m makes me very happy as well. unless you think you are going to be really trating it roughly the 600m holds up fine for day to day use. ive carried it in my backpack, messenger bag etc with no issues.

I used to own a 600m, switced to a T42. Why? Flexview display, low-weight in a 15" form-factor, sturdy as anything. I can pick up the T42 by its lcd, its hinges are that sturdy. The keyboard's amazing, and the track-point is great (I know the Latitude comes with one too).

I've owned the 600m, and currently own the IBM. The dell went back after several weeks-- build quality was poor and the dvd drive would crash when I watched movies. Dell's tech support << IBM's tech support; the latter's representatives seem much more knowledgeable and seem like they actually listen to your specific problem rather than running down a laundry list of common problems (no knock on any tech support people). If you're going to be using this notebook for a long time, I highly recommend the T series. (Where's aphex to talk up the Ts?)

Had an Inspiron 8100. That thing died on me after 3yrs (party my own doing). Now soon the be the proud owner of an IBM X31 (on route!) :D

Will I ever go back to Dell for laptops? Not in the foreseeable future, no.

Get the dell. They have a 30 day return policy. They even pay for return shipping. Many people complain about the lack of sturdiness (or some other off-the-production-line problem) right when they get it and they take advantage of the return policy. But, haven't heard many major problems with Dells any more than other vendors past this initial stage (hey, search this forum, and you'd find complaints about IBMs too). If bad stuff happens, you've got that 3 year warrenty.

Ultimately the decision is up to you. If you don't need it right away, do what thuned suggests-- buy the dell. If you like it and don't have problems with it, that's great-- you've saved $427. Stress test it; run prime95, open a lot of programs while playing dvds, movies.. if it holds up without blue screening and you don't mind the lesser build quality, you're all set. If not, try out the T series.

I own a dell as well as a T41....

Neither has given me problems so far, but the dell is far more "quirky" than the IBM.

If you need something reliable... go for the IBM
