IBM present VS IBM past

Ok, I am currently researching the market for laptops, and till now the IBM thinkpad R50e ( made by Lenovo) looks like my best bet, and I wanted to know, was the switch from IBM to Lenovo of a deep impact to the quality of thinkpads? Or are they still being manafactured with the same build quality ?

No impact.... product line continues with improvements, and new models that were already in the pipe. Production locations have not changed - So LG, among others are still manufacturing ThinkPads for Lenovo as they were for IBM - least until Lenovo can do more volume out of their own manufacturing subsidiaries - which have manufactured ThinkPads before for IBM.

It's business as usual. Though my bet is on a major re-org later this year in Lenovo-least the old IBM portion. They are still operating on the IBM model of management, and layers of people who are redundant.

Honestly I had a R5x and I was not that impressed. It is unusually heavy for being like 6.5 lbs. Also its bulky as heck it feels thicker than most laptops of it's class. And of course it isn't built nearly as well or at least doesn't feel like it being made entirely of plastic. I say you go with a T4x I was so put off by the R51 I sold mine and went for a T4x you'll love it.

R51 is meant to be a value oriented machine, hence, thicker and heavier.... A decent machine at the higher end, but just plain old lappy at the low end.

Dan is right on the money. The R-series offers comparable build quality & durability to that of the T-series, but to keep costs low they used cheaper ABS plastic and layered it on thicker. If you can't carry an extra pound to save several hundred dollars, move on 😉 j/k

The R50e that IBM has on sale for $599-->$1049 is awesome for the money. Take advantage of the free memory upgrade, get yourself to 1GB total, and get a decent warranty & you've got a great machine that will last a long time for basic portable usage: as long as you don't mind the weight.

And right now every Thinkpad on sale and probably even in development was originally designed by IBM, Lenovo's not had an effect on "new" models yet. Soon I should see exactly how/when Lenovo will start impacting Thinkpads 😉
