<<anti-maxtor/smart-ass GX guyz>>

I dont think they're really that smart, just another bunch of biased IBM lovers.

I waz thinking GX-buck. He waz one of those "When i waz your age, I had 100 million maxtors, and each and every one of them died on me. Then I went to war in 'Nam and killed the entire viet-cong army."

Lets not bring Buck in, he's a WD loyal, Anandtechers dont like WDs, and I have to say they're crap too.

Before you go out and buy an IBM 75GXP series make absolutely certain
that is was not made in Hungary. Many people had problems with these drives
I was one of the poor souls who got a couple of these bad drives.
Fortunately I was able to return them without a hassle as i bought them at a local shop. If you have some spare time to browse some lengthy threads,
then go over to the Storage Review forums and read about the IBM 75 GXP
nightmares.
I ended up getting a Maxtor 30 gig 7200 rpm to replace my crapped out
IBM drives. "They are available right of the shelf at a mom and pop computer shop in my area "and so far it has been a good drive. They are
not noisy as some claim and run fairly cool.

I tend to see a slightly higher failure rate with Maxtor, but IBM is more expensive. I personally use Maxtor because the extra price isn't worth the slightly better reliability. Look at my computers, I've only had problems with 1 out of about 15 maxtors in the last 2 years. IBM makes excellent drives, but for the money I'd go with a Maxtor.

Some Hungarian IBMs had higher than normal defect rates, but that was back when 10GB was considered large, and for my own IBMs, the only failures have been with some Thailand-made units containing Japanese circuit boards (Deskstar 5, 8). My Hungarian ones, including those with Romanian circuit boards, have been fine and haven't even made any funny sounds.

I use 2 IBM 75GXPs and I think they are great drives.

The Maxtors are no slouch either though. Personally I'd go IBM, but you can't really go wrong either way.

From PC World review.

Maxtor's speedy, user-friendly drives win as Best Buys in both our 7200-rpm and 5400-rpm categories. The 7200-rpm, 60.5GB DiamondMax Plus 60 ($300) was the fastest drive in our tests. Maxtor's 40.9GB DiamondMax VL 40 ($180) beat nearly every drive in the 5200-rpm category (excluding its cousin, the DiamondMax 80) and also outperformed two of the 7200-rpm competitors. Each hard drive comes with a very good upgrade kit and offers ample storage at a moderate cost per gigabyte.

They tested 4 brands including 75GXP 45 gig and 75 gig. All Maxtor drives easily beat other brands in copying large chunk of files. Yeah even 5400rpm Maxtors handily beat 75gxp in that regard. But IBM was faster by slight margin in some applications like Photo Shop, Access, Photo Paint, though.
I personally use Maxtor, and it's fast and quiet. My old IBM is slow and damn loud.😉

I own both. I like my Maxtor more..

Maxtor used to blow goats, but they are very good now. So is IBM, but I just prefer Maxtor now.

Both are good especially if you are just using eide. IF you're gonna get IBM for scsi, those are great too.

Used both maxtor 80 gigs and ibm 75gxp 30 gigs, no problems with them both are quiet nice performance... so let's end this ^_^

According to Tom's Hardware IBM's are tops and for that and a number of other reasons I purchased their hard drive.

Can't really go wrong with QUANTUM or IBM for speed, or MAXTOR for price and reliability. I have had several MAXTOR's, never any real problems with them, but I've had 4 WESTERN DIGITAL's die on me over 5 years time. Funny, I used to hear that WESTERN DIGITAL's were the best, I guess not anymore. Go with a QUANTUM or IBM from somewhere online, or MAXTOR if you want to save a few bucks (after rebate).

Bah. Maxtor DM+60 kills the Quantum AS in perfomance and is a bit quieter to boot. The Quantum LM still gots the fastest seeks, but is still a "slow poke" with STR.

<<Maxtor DM+60 kills the Quantum AS in perfomance and is a bit quieter to boot.>>

I wouldnt exactly call it "kill", the DM+60 is a better performer, but not by much. They're both very quiet, their seeks just sound a little different, Maxtor's seek tend to have a higher pitch, where as the Quantum has a lower one.

Can't go wrong with both, it's up to you basically. I have had IBM for a few years now and I keep re-buying them because I haven't had any troubles. I am sure Maxtor owners would feel the same way.
