IBM is blowing out new (not refurbished) recent Thinkpad notebooks in their eBay store. Thinkpad X22 P3-800 128MB/20GB 12.1"TFT 3.7lb, 1.2" thick, 3yr warranty $1079. Search for 26629EU!

Can't believe this hasn't been posted yet (did a search for IBM). Ripped from TB....

So tempted... what do you guys think? I was going to get the Gateway 200. Which is about double the price, a little thinner and looks a lot nicer. Originally wanted the Portege 2000 for it's unbelievably small size but decided against it. Just had my Toshiba Portege 3020ct crap out on me (harddrive died), replaced it with an IBM 20gb harddrive, that died too after two weeks... so thinking about giving up on that laptop....

I believe this was posted in the last week, but for their palm workpads that they were blowing out at $99.

$1079 for a p3-800? Isn't that a little much? Or is this a really slim notebook? Not thread crapping..just wondering. Only laptop I have is the ibm 701c (known for the butterfly keyboard...it's a 486, I use it here at college as a chat machine, leave it on all the time), and it's still going strong. Don't really move it around though.

I've gone through a bunch of laptops -- 2 thinkpads (T22 & 600), some HPs and some Compaqs... by far the IBMs were the best. They're usually more expensive, but IMHO, very much worth it. Yeah its only 800mhz, but for MS Office work or even some light development, that's more than enough.

Also, note that you don't get any media devices included. You either have to shell out for the rather expensive media slice & bay drives, or pickup a USB drive

I kept the IBM store bookmarked all summer until I found a hot deal (I got a loaded T23 for $1199). You're right, I wonder why these deals aren't mentioned more often.

The deals at the store are super hot when you figure that the X,A,T series all come with 3-yr warranties.

As for this particular deal, I'm not a huge fan of the X series because of the smaller screensize/keyboard and the need for a media slice. But if the ultra-portabability appeals to you, then go for it, but keep in mind that the T-series is only 1 lb more.

I think IBM notebokks are among the best-quality ones, they have superb manufacturing and testing. The X22 is a super-thin notebook (1/2 inch!), but please note it doesn't come with ANY media drive - no floppy, CD-ROM or DVD. Plan on spending a few hundred bucks for their media slice or docking station, or external drive.

Wow...great deal. Just bid for one. IBM laptops are highly regarded, and American Express helps bump the warranty to 4 years. Perfect for 4 years of undergrad use =D

I just can't get over the fact that there's no CD drives and the tiny 12.1 screen. I know this is supposed to be ultra portable but I'd prefer at least an 8x DVD and a 14.1 LCD if this had those then I'd jump on this faster than ...

AFAIK, Dell, HP, Compaq, IBM, etc...they're all outsourced to Taiwanese companies (which makes the majority of laptops in the world). I wouldn't be surprised if the same company made laptops for more than one of these manufacturers.

The price went up to $1150 (14:25EST).

IT IS STILL AN AUCTION! I guess the price will rocket up within the next 24 hours.

The real deal was the string of 'Buy it Now's for $1100 that have been regularly posted in the past couple days.

Most IBM Thinkpads are built at IBM Manufacturing plants (in North America, Asia, and Europe). I agree that Dell and Gateway source (the Dell and Gateway ultraportable are the same box) from Asia.

The big difference is who designs a box - IBM designs these machines, Dell and GTW take the "flavor of the month". I don't know about HP/CPQ; Toshiba used to make their own - given their pricing lately, they might have changed their model.

I agree that IBM machines are more expensive, but you get what you pay for. Everyone I know that has switched from another brand to IBM loves it!

You are absolutely right about the media slice being necessary, but you can get a combo DVD/CD-RW (I think 16x) for $299 - a lot cheaper than the competition. And any drive you buy for that bay will work in any lettered Thinkpad - XTRA (not 600 or older). I don't think that Dell or Compaq can say that.

This was typed on a T20.

Actually, both Dell and Compaq have a backwards compatible system for their business notebooks. My Lattitude C400 has drives that fit in any C series Lattitude. Just a thought.

For anyone looking at buying a laptop, one thing is very important to consider - the warrantee and customer support.

I purchased an IBM T20 from the IBM store at a plant I worked at over the summer over a year ago, and the lcd failed on it (fun green and red dancing colors). I called IBM support, they asked for my name, model #, and serial # and after an attempt to fix it, they said a box would be on my door the next morning to ship off the laptop to be repaired. I got the box the next day from airborne express, it got there overnight, and I received my lappy back the next day with a brand new lcd screen. It doesn't get much better than that.

I don't know what the policies are for dell, hp, gateway, and the like, but I don't think they even compare with IBM's commitment to their laptop customers.
