ibm laptop with a external usb cdrw

I just bought a ibm thinkpad, but it doesn't come with a cd rom. So I was thinking of getting an external cdrw. But I have this question, can I boot xp cd off of the external drive? Will the computer recognize the drive? Thanks

I don't think so - only the newest latops have BIOSes that support USB in DOS, and that is what it takes to have a USB boot drive. A Thinkpad with no CD drive is pretty old by laptop standards.

You posted this same question in the genral hardware forum - and multiple posts across different forums is verboten. 🙁
