Can anyone recommend a good up to date buying guide for IBM laptops , explaining the difference between all the different specs ? I did see the Laptop Logic Buyers guide , quite good , but it's already a bit out of date ( no Dothan mentioned ) .

Which LaptopLogic Buyer's Guide are you referring to? Could you PM me a link? I would PM you, but you don't have PM's enabled :)
In regards to buying a Thinkpad, what are you looking to use it for? Why do you want a Thinkpad? And of course, how much do you want to spend?

If you pay full retail price, sure. But then again I guess all of us go to a car dealership and pay full MSRP, eh?

You get what you pay for, that's what it all comes down to.

Never used an IBM laptop eh??? In my experience:

1) Buy Thinkpad
2) ...
3) Everybody bends over so you can have your "profit"

Am looking to replace my current laptop - would love a Thinkpad - but can't find one with a XGA display. They are all apparently standard aspect ratio screens.

What do you mean an XGA display? A lot of Thinkpads come with XGA displays, if by XGA you mean 1024x768.
